Querer conjugation

Querer conjugation - to want

Table of Contents

Querer is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to want”.

Below are all of the conjugations for querer in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Querer Infinitive

English Infinitive to want
Spanish Infinitive querer

Querer Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está queriendo) and past continuous (estaba queriendo). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. wanting).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he querido and hubiera querido. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have wanted).

Gerundio / Gerund  queriendo
Participio / Past Participle  querido

Querer Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Querer Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I want” or “they want”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo quiero
quieres
Él / Ella / Usted quiere
Nosotros / as queremos
Vosotros / as queréis
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes quieren

Querer Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I wanted” or “she wanted” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Él / Ella / Usted quiso He / she / you wanted
Nosotros / as quisimos We wanted
Vosotros / as quisisteis You wanted
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes quisieron They / you wanted
Vos quisiste You wanted

Querer Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was wanting” or “she was wanting” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Yo quería I was wanting
querías You were wanting
Él / Ella / Usted quería He was / she was / you were wanting
Nosotros / as queríamos We were wanting
Vosotros / as queríais You were wanting

Querer Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have wanted” and “she has wanted”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo he querido I have wanted

Él / Ella / Usted ha querido He has / she has / you have wanted
Nosotros / as hemos querido We have wanted
Vosotros / as habéis querido You have wanted
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes han querido They / you have wanted
Vos has querido You have wanted

Querer Conditional / Condicional

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a querer” means “They are going to want”.
