Intervenir conjugation

Table of Contents

Intervenir is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to intervene, interfere”.

Below are all of the conjugations for intervenir in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Intervenir Infinitive

English Infinitive to intervene, interfere
Spanish Infinitive intervenir

Intervenir Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está interviniendo) and past continuous (estaba interviniendo). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. intervening).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he intervenido and hubiera intervenido. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have intervened).

Gerundio / Gerund  interviniendo
Participio / Past Participle  intervenido

Intervenir Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Intervenir Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I intervene” or “they intervene”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo intervengo
intervienes
Él / Ella / Usted interviene
Nosotros / as intervenimos
Vosotros / as intervenís
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes intervienen
Vos intervenís

Intervenir Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I intervened” or “she intervened” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo intervine I intervened
interviniste You intervened
Él / Ella / Usted intervino He / she / you intervened
Nosotros / as intervinimos We intervened
Vosotros / as intervinisteis You intervened
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes intervinieron They / you intervened
Vos interviniste You intervened

Intervenir Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was intervening” or “she was intervening” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo intervenía I was intervening
intervenías You were intervening
Él / Ella / Usted intervenía He was / she was / you were intervening
Nosotros / as interveníamos We were intervening
Vosotros / as interveníais You were intervening
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes intervenían They / you were intervening
Vos intervenías You were intervening

Intervenir Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have intervened” and “she has intervened”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo he intervenido I have intervened
has intervenido You have intervened
Él / Ella / Usted ha intervenido He has / she has / you have intervened
Nosotros / as hemos intervenido We have intervened
Vosotros / as habéis intervenido You have intervened
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes han intervenido They / you have intervened
Vos has intervenido You have intervened

Intervenir Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would intervene” or “she would intervene”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

Pronoun Spanish Englush
Yo intervendría I would intervene
intervendrías You would intervene
Él / Ella / Usted intervendría He / she / you would intervene
Nosotros / as intervendríamos We would intervene
Vosotros / as intervendríais You would intervene
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes intervendrían They / you would intervene
Vos intervendrías You would intervene

Intervenir Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will intervene” or “they will intervene”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a intervenir” means “They are going to intervene”.

Yo intervendré I will intervene
intervendrás You will intervene
Él / Ella / Usted intervendrá He / she / you will intervene
