Intentar conjugation

Intentar conjugation - to try

Table of Contents

Intentar is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to try”.

Below are all of the conjugations for intentar in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Intentar Infinitive

English Infinitive to try
Spanish Infinitive intentar

Intentar Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está intentando) and past continuous (estaba intentando). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. trying).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he intentado and hubiera intentado. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have tried).

Gerundio / Gerund  intentando
Participio / Past Participle  intentado

Intentar Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Intentar Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I try” or “they try”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo intento
intentas
Él / Ella / Usted intenta
Nosotros / as intentamos
Vosotros / as intentáis
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes intentan
Vos intentás

Intentar Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I tried” or “she tried” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo intenté I tried
intentaste You tried
Él / Ella / Usted intentó He / she / you tried
Nosotros / as intentamos We tried
Vosotros / as intentasteis You tried
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes intentaron They / you tried
Vos intentaste You tried

Intentar Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was trying” or “she was trying” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo intentaba I was trying
intentabas You were trying
Él / Ella / Usted intentaba He was / she was / you were trying
Nosotros / as intentábamos We were trying
Vosotros / as intentabais You were trying
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes intentaban They / you were trying

Intentar Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have tried” and “she has tried”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo he intentado I have tried
has intentado You have tried
Él / Ella / Usted ha intentado He has / she has / you have tried
Nosotros / as hemos intentado We have tried
Vosotros / as habéis intentado You have tried
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes han intentado They / you have tried
Vos has intentado You have tried

Intentar Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would try” or “she would try”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

intentarías You would try
Él / Ella / Usted intentaría He / she / you would try
Nosotros / as intentaríamos We would try

Intentar Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will try” or “they will try”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a intentar” means “They are going to try”.

intentarás You will try
Él / Ella / Usted intentará He / she / you will try
