Disentir conjugation

Disentir conjugation - to disagree

Table of Contents

Disentir is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to disagree, dissent”.

Below are all of the conjugations for disentir in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Disentir Infinitive

English Infinitive to disagree, dissent
Spanish Infinitive disentir

Disentir Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está disintiendo) and past continuous (estaba disintiendo). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. disagreeing).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he disentido and hubiera disentido. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have disagreed).

Gerundio / Gerund  disintiendo
Participio / Past Participle  disentido

Disentir Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Disentir Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I disagree” or “they disagree”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo disiento
disientes
Él / Ella / Usted disiente
Nosotros / as disentimos
Vosotros / as disentís
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes disienten
Vos disentís

Disentir Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I disagreed” or “she disagreed” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo disentí I disagreed
disentiste You disagreed
Él / Ella / Usted disintió He / she / you disagreed
Nosotros / as disentimos We disagreed
Vosotros / as disentisteis You disagreed
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes disintieron They / you disagreed
Vos disentiste You disagreed

Disentir Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was disagreeing” or “she was disagreeing” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo disentía I was disagreeing
disentías You were disagreeing
Él / Ella / Usted disentía He was / she was / you were disagreeing
Nosotros / as disentíamos We were disagreeing
Vosotros / as disentíais You were disagreeing
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes disentían They / you were disagreeing
Vos disentías You were disagreeing

Disentir Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have disagreed” and “she has disagreed”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo he disentido I have disagreed
has disentido You have disagreed
Él / Ella / Usted ha disentido He has / she has / you have disagreed
Nosotros / as hemos disentido We have disagreed
Vosotros / as habéis disentido You have disagreed
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes han disentido They / you have disagreed
Vos has disentido You have disagreed

Disentir Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would disagree” or “she would disagree”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

Pronoun Spanish Englush
Yo disentiría I would disagree
disentirías You would disagree
Él / Ella / Usted disentiría He / she / you would disagree
Nosotros / as disentiríamos We would disagree
Vosotros / as disentiríais You would disagree
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes disentirían They / you would disagree
Vos disentirías You would disagree

Disentir Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will disagree” or “they will disagree”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a disentir” means “They are going to disagree”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo disentiré I will disagree
disentirás You will disagree
Él / Ella / Usted disentirá He / she / you will disagree
Nosotros / as disentiremos We will disagree
