Comentar conjugation

Comentar conjugation - to comment

Table of Contents

Comentar is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to comment”.

Below are all of the conjugations for comentar in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Comentar Infinitive

English Infinitive to comment
Spanish Infinitive comentar

Comentar Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está comentando) and past continuous (estaba comentando). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. commenting).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he comentado and hubiera comentado. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have commented).

Gerundio / Gerund  comentando
Participio / Past Participle  comentado

Comentar Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Comentar Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I comment” or “they comment”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo comento
comentas
Él / Ella / Usted comenta
Nosotros / as comentamos
Vosotros / as comentáis
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes comentan
Vos comentás

Comentar Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I commented” or “she commented” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo comenté I commented
comentaste You commented
Él / Ella / Usted comentó He / she / you commented
Nosotros / as comentamos We commented
Vosotros / as comentasteis You commented
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes comentaron They / you commented
Vos comentaste You commented

Comentar Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was commenting” or “she was commenting” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo comentaba I was commenting
comentabas You were commenting
Él / Ella / Usted comentaba He was / she was / you were commenting
Nosotros / as comentábamos We were commenting
Vosotros / as comentabais You were commenting
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes comentaban They / you were commenting
Vos comentabas You were commenting

Comentar Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have commented” and “she has commented”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo he comentado I have commented
has comentado You have commented
Él / Ella / Usted ha comentado He has / she has / you have commented
Nosotros / as hemos comentado We have commented
Vosotros / as habéis comentado You have commented
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes han comentado They / you have commented
Vos has comentado You have commented

Comentar Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would comment” or “she would comment”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

Pronoun Spanish Englush
Yo comentaría I would comment
comentarías You would comment
Él / Ella / Usted comentaría He / she / you would comment
Nosotros / as comentaríamos We would comment
Vosotros / as comentaríais You would comment

Comentar Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will comment” or “they will comment”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a comentar” means “They are going to comment”.

Yo comentaré I will comment
comentarás You will comment
