Coincidir conjugation

Coincidir conjugation - to coincide

Table of Contents

Coincidir is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to coincide, agree”.

Below are all of the conjugations for coincidir in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Coincidir Infinitive

English Infinitive to coincide, agree
Spanish Infinitive coincidir

Coincidir Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está coincidiendo) and past continuous (estaba coincidiendo). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. coinciding).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he coincidido and hubiera coincidido. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have coincided).

Gerundio / Gerund  coincidiendo
Participio / Past Participle  coincidido

Coincidir Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Coincidir Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I coincide” or “they coincide”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo coincido
coincides
Él / Ella / Usted coincide
Nosotros / as coincidimos
Vosotros / as coincidís
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes coinciden
Vos coincidís

Coincidir Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I coincided” or “she coincided” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo coincidí I coincided
coincidiste You coincided
Él / Ella / Usted coincidió He / she / you coincided
Nosotros / as coincidimos We coincided
Vosotros / as coincidisteis You coincided
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes coincidieron They / you coincided
Vos coincidiste You coincided

Coincidir Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was coinciding” or “she was coinciding” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo coincidía I was coinciding
coincidías You were coinciding
Él / Ella / Usted coincidía He was / she was / you were coinciding
Nosotros / as coincidíamos We were coinciding
Vosotros / as coincidíais You were coinciding
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes coincidían They / you were coinciding
Vos coincidías You were coinciding

Coincidir Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have coincided” and “she has coincided”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo he coincidido I have coincided
has coincidido You have coincided
Él / Ella / Usted ha coincidido He has / she has / you have coincided
Nosotros / as hemos coincidido We have coincided
Vosotros / as habéis coincidido You have coincided
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes han coincidido They / you have coincided
Vos has coincidido You have coincided

Coincidir Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would coincide” or “she would coincide”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

Yo coincidiría I would coincide
coincidirías You would coincide

Coincidir Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will coincide” or “they will coincide”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a coincidir” means “They are going to coincide”.
