Aprovecharse conjugation

Aprovecharse conjugation - to take advantage of

Table of Contents

Aprovecharse is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to take advantage of, make use of”.

It’s a reflexive verb, which means the subject performs the action upon themselves – e.g. “I wake myself”.

Reflexive verbs always carry a reflexive pronoun – me, te, se, nos or os – which is often placed before the conjugated verb (e.g. me aprovecho) or after the infinitive (e.g. Él tiene que aprovecharse).

Below are all of the conjugations for aprovecharse in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Aprovecharse Infinitive

English Infinitive to take advantage of, make use of
Spanish Infinitive aprovecharse

Aprovecharse Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está aprovechándose) and past continuous (estaba aprovechándose). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. taking advantage of).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he aprovechado and hubiera aprovechado. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have taken advantage of).

Gerundio / Gerund  aprovechándose
Participio / Past Participle  aprovechado

Aprovecharse Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Aprovecharse Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I take advantage of” or “they take advantage of”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo me aprovecho
te aprovechas
Él / Ella / Usted se aprovecha
Nosotros / as nos aprovechamos
Vosotros / as os aprovecháis
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes se aprovechan

Aprovecharse Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I took advantage of” or “she took advantage of” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo me aproveché I took advantage of
te aprovechaste You took advantage of
Él / Ella / Usted se aprovechó He / she / you took advantage of
Nosotros / as nos aprovechamos We took advantage of
Vosotros / as os aprovechasteis You took advantage of
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes se aprovecharon They / you took advantage of
Vos te aprovechaste You took advantage of

Aprovecharse Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was taking advantage of” or “she was taking advantage of” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo me aprovechaba I was taking advantage of

Nosotros / as nos aprovechábamos We were taking advantage of
Vosotros / as os aprovechabais You were taking advantage of
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes se aprovechaban They / you were taking advantage of
Vos te aprovechabas You were taking advantage of

Aprovecharse Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have taken advantage of” and “she has taken advantage of”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo me he aprovechado I have taken advantage of
te has aprovechado You have taken advantage of
Él / Ella / Usted se ha aprovechado He has / she has / you have taken advantage of

Aprovecharse Conditional / Condicional

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will take advantage of” or “they will take advantage of”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a aprovecharse” means “They are going to take advantage of”.
