Aparentar conjugation

Aparentar conjugation - to feign

Table of Contents

Aparentar is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to feign, pretend, assume”.

Below are all of the conjugations for aparentar in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Aparentar Infinitive

English Infinitive to feign, pretend, assume
Spanish Infinitive aparentar

Aparentar Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está aparentando) and past continuous (estaba aparentando). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. feigning).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he aparentado and hubiera aparentado. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have feigned).

Gerundio / Gerund  aparentando
Participio / Past Participle  aparentado

Aparentar Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Aparentar Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I feign” or “they feign”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo aparento
aparentas
Él / Ella / Usted aparenta
Nosotros / as aparentamos
Vosotros / as aparentáis
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes aparentan
Vos aparentás

Aparentar Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I feigned” or “she feigned” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo aparenté I feigned
aparentaste You feigned
Él / Ella / Usted aparentó He / she / you feigned
Nosotros / as aparentamos We feigned
Vosotros / as aparentasteis You feigned
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes aparentaron They / you feigned
Vos aparentaste You feigned

Aparentar Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was feigning” or “she was feigning” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo aparentaba I was feigning
aparentabas You were feigning
Él / Ella / Usted aparentaba He was / she was / you were feigning
Nosotros / as aparentábamos We were feigning
Vosotros / as aparentabais You were feigning
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes aparentaban They / you were feigning
Vos aparentabas You were feigning

Aparentar Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have feigned” and “she has feigned”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo he aparentado I have feigned
has aparentado You have feigned
Él / Ella / Usted ha aparentado He has / she has / you have feigned
Nosotros / as hemos aparentado We have feigned
Vosotros / as habéis aparentado You have feigned
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes han aparentado They / you have feigned
Vos has aparentado You have feigned

Aparentar Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would feign” or “she would feign”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

Pronoun Spanish Englush
Yo aparentaría I would feign
aparentarías You would feign
Él / Ella / Usted aparentaría He / she / you would feign
Nosotros / as aparentaríamos We would feign
Vosotros / as aparentaríais You would feign
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes aparentarían They / you would feign

Aparentar Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will feign” or “they will feign”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a aparentar” means “They are going to feign”.

aparentarás You will feign
Él / Ella / Usted aparentará He / she / you will feign
