Afeitarse conjugation

Afeitarse conjugation - to shave oneself

Table of Contents

Afeitarse is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to shave oneself”.

It’s a reflexive verb, which means the subject performs the action upon themselves – e.g. “I wake myself”.

Reflexive verbs always carry a reflexive pronoun – me, te, se, nos or os – which is often placed before the conjugated verb (e.g. me afeito) or after the infinitive (e.g. Él tiene que afeitarse).

Below are all of the conjugations for afeitarse in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Afeitarse Infinitive

English Infinitive to shave oneself
Spanish Infinitive afeitarse

Afeitarse Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está afeitándose) and past continuous (estaba afeitándose). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. shaving myself).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he afeitado and hubiera afeitado. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have shaved myself).

Gerundio / Gerund  afeitándose
Participio / Past Participle  afeitado

Afeitarse Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Afeitarse Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I shave myself” or “they shave myself”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo me afeito
te afeitas
Él / Ella / Usted se afeita
Nosotros / as nos afeitamos
Vosotros / as os afeitáis
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes se afeitan
Vos te aferrás

Afeitarse Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I shaved myself” or “she shaved myself” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo me afeité I shaved myself
te afeitaste You shaved myself
Él / Ella / Usted se afeitó He / she / you shaved myself
Nosotros / as nos afeitamos We shaved myself
Vosotros / as os afeitasteis You shaved myself
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes se afeitaron They / you shaved myself
Vos te afeitaste You shaved myself

Afeitarse Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was shaving myself” or “she was shaving myself” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo me afeitaba I was shaving myself
te afeitabas You were shaving myself
Él / Ella / Usted se afeitaba He was / she was / you were shaving myself
Nosotros / as nos afeitábamos We were shaving myself
Vosotros / as os afeitabais You were shaving myself
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes se afeitaban They / you were shaving myself
Vos te afeitabas You were shaving myself

Afeitarse Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have shaved myself” and “she has shaved myself”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo me he afeitado I have shaved myself
te has afeitado You have shaved myself
Él / Ella / Usted se ha afeitado He has / she has / you have shaved myself
Nosotros / as nos hemos afeitado We have shaved myself
Vosotros / as os habéis afeitado You have shaved myself
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes se han afeitado They / you have shaved myself
Vos te has afeitado You have shaved myself

Afeitarse Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would shave oneself” or “she would shave oneself”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

Pronoun Spanish Englush
Yo me afeitaría I would shave myself
te afeitarías You would shave myself

Vosotros / as os afeitaríais You would shave myself
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes se afeitarían They / you would shave myself

Afeitarse Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will shave oneself” or “they will shave oneself”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a afeitarse” means “They are going to shave oneself”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo me afeitaré I will shave myself
te afeitarás You will shave myself
