Administrar conjugation

Administrar conjugation - to manage

Table of Contents

Administrar is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to manage, deal, administer”.

Below are all of the conjugations for administrar in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Administrar Infinitive

English Infinitive to manage, deal, administer
Spanish Infinitive administrar

Administrar Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está administrando) and past continuous (estaba administrando). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. managing).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he administrado and hubiera administrado. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have managed).

Gerundio / Gerund  administrando
Participio / Past Participle  administrado

Administrar Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Administrar Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I manage” or “they manage”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo administro
administras
Él / Ella / Usted administra
Nosotros / as administramos
Vosotros / as administráis
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes administran
Vos admirás

Administrar Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I managed” or “she managed” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo administré I managed
administraste You managed
Él / Ella / Usted administró He / she / you managed
Nosotros / as administramos We managed
Vosotros / as administrasteis You managed
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes administraron They / you managed
Vos administraste You managed

Administrar Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was managing” or “she was managing” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo administraba I was managing
administrabas You were managing
Él / Ella / Usted administraba He was / she was / you were managing
Nosotros / as administrábamos We were managing
Vosotros / as administrabais You were managing
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes administraban They / you were managing

Administrar Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have managed” and “she has managed”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo he administrado I have managed
has administrado You have managed
Él / Ella / Usted ha administrado He has / she has / you have managed
Nosotros / as hemos administrado We have managed
Vosotros / as habéis administrado You have managed
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes han administrado They / you have managed
Vos has administrado You have managed

Administrar Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would manage” or “she would manage”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

Pronoun Spanish Englush
Yo administraría I would manage
administrarías You would manage
Él / Ella / Usted administraría He / she / you would manage
Nosotros / as administraríamos We would manage

Administrar Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will manage” or “they will manage”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a administrar” means “They are going to manage”.
